SMH Welcomes New CRNA to Anesthesiology

0000Ball

Steven Ball

PLYMOUTH, N.H. -  An emergency medical technician since age 18, a paramedic, a nurse since 2002, and a certified registered nurse anesthetist since 2008, caring for patients has been a way of life for Steven Ball.  As the newest member of Speare Memorial Hospital’s anesthesia team, Mr. Ball brings all that experience together “to give people confidence when they are nervous” before a surgical procedure.  Mr. Ball says that he pursued a career in anesthesia because he wanted the independence that anesthesia practice brings, and the goal of matching individual patient needs with the science of the medications.  He explains “I most enjoy the thought process of best managing patient outcomes based on how the medicines work.  There are many different ways to administer anesthesia – general anesthesia, intrathecal, epidural, peripheral nerve blocks, sedation, but each patient and situation is different.”

“Steve’s breadth and depth of professional experience, and having worked in a large, urban hospital, is a tremendous asset to our hospital and patients,” says Dr. Timothy Lyons, director of anesthesiology.  “More importantly, not only is his move to central New Hampshire a good fit professionally, but personally.  He and his wife were looking for the right combination of a place to work, live, and play” Originally from Wakefield, Mass, Mr. Ball and his wife, Emily, were drawn to Speare Memorial Hospital because growing up he had spent time on Lake Winnipesaukee and in the Franconia area.  They both enjoy the outdoors and are excited about the accessibility to mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, camping, climbing, backpacking, skiing, and kayaking, a few of their favorite activities.

After graduating with his Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Mr. Ball first worked in Hartford, Conn, both as a trauma and cardiothoracic ICU nurse.  He received his CRNA degree from the New Britain School of Nurse Anesthesia and a Master of Science degree in Biological Sciences: Anesthesia from Central Connecticut State University.  Following his anesthesia residency and training, Mr. Ball worked at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn.
