A Fellowship-Trained Ophthalmologist and Ocular Surgeon, Joins Medical Staff

Isabel Balderas, MD

Winchester, MA. – Winchester Hospital has welcomed a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist and ocular surgeon to its medical staff. A resident of North Reading, Isabel Balderas, MD is practicing alongside eye physician and surgeon Jason Gilbert, MD in Medford.

Dr. Balderas received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston, and she received her bachelor’s degree from Saint Louis University in St. Louis, Mo. She completed a glaucoma fellowship at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston, a glaucoma fellowship and an ophthalmology residency at Tufts Medical Center-New England Eye Center in Boston, and an internship at Cambridge Health Alliance.

Dr. Balderas speaks English and Spanish. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.


Hospital Urologist Named President of Massachusetts Association of Practicing Urologists

Winchester, MA. – Winchester Hospital urologist Jerry Rittenhouse, MD has been named president of the Massachusetts Association of Practicing Urologists (MAPU). Established in 1984, MAPU represents urologists who are dedicated to improving the standards and practice of urology while advocating for legislation on both the state and national levels.

Dr. Rittenhouse earned his medical degree from Loma Linda University Medical School in Loma Linda, Calif., and his bachelor’s degree from Atlantic Union College in South Lancaster, Mass. He completed a surgical internship, surgical residency and urological residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, Calif.

A member of the American Board of Urology, Dr. Rittenhouse practices at Mystic Valley Urological Associates in Stoneham. He lives in Stoneham.


MD Now Providing Innovative Treatments for Breast and Gynecological

Winchester, MA – Patients of the Winchester Hospital Radiation Oncology Center will now benefit from new services, with the addition of Bruce A. Bornstein, MD to its team of radiation oncologists.

Dr. Bornstein treats all cancers and provides special expertise in the use of electronic brachytherapy. With this procedure, used for early stage breast cancer, patients can complete treatment in five days versus the traditional six weeks of radiation therapy. There is such specific criterion for eligibility that Dr. Bornstein and his colleagues evaluate each patient’s case individually before determining whether it is a clinically appropriate option. Electronic brachytherapy is also used as a “boost” for gynecological cancers to significantly reduce recurrence of these cancers.

A Massachusetts native, Dr. Bornstein has extensive expertise and experience in the field of radiation oncology and special interests in oncology and women’s health. Previously, Dr. Bornstein was on faculty at the Harvard Joint Center for Radiation Therapy which included treating patients at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Children’s Hospital Boston. He was also director of the Hyperthermia Program at Dana Farber Cancer-Institute and the recipient of multiple research awards.

Dr. Bornstein is a board certified radiation oncologist. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. He also has an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management and a fellowship in the American College of Radiation Oncology. Dr. Bornstein has an academic appointment at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he is an assistant clinical professor of radiation oncology at Harvard Medical School


Massachusetts Organization of Nurse Executives Installs New President-Elect

At the Annual Meeting of the Massachusetts Organization of Nurse Executives, Kevin Whitney, RN, MA, NEA-BC, became the President-Elect of the Massachusetts Organization of Nurse Executives (MONE).

Whitney has been a member of MONE since 2002 and has served on the Board as the Metro-West Regional Representative and as Secretary and chair of the By-laws Committee.  He is the Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Mass. Kevin will succeed President Elaine Bridge for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

As President-Elect, Whitney’s top priority will be to oversee the implementation of MONE’s new three-year strategic plan. “Kevin is energetic, insightful, and passionate about ensuring quality patient outcomes are achieved and that Massachusetts has a competent and sufficient nursing work force,” said Sharon Gale, Executive Director of MONE.  “His commitment and contributions have been significant.”

As the voice of nursing leaders in Massachusetts, MONE’s top priorities will be to develop the future care environment for the best quality and safety outcomes for patients and families, to influence public policy development in health care, and to ensure an adequate supply of competent nurses and nursing faculty to avert the projected nursing shortage.

“It will be an honor to serve as President for such an incredible and valuable nursing leadership organization; one that focuses on quality & patient safety, improving the work environment for direct-care nurses, and one that bases practice on evidence and nursing research,” said Whitney.

“As President, I will look forward to furthering the great work of my predecessors, the entire board, and membership to assist in achieving the key strategic priorities for the organization.”  Whitney earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Massachusetts Lowell and a Master’s degree in Health Care Administration from Framingham State College.  He is a Board-certified Nurse Executive by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.


Winchester Hospital Appoints Director of Maternal Child Health

Donna Sherrill, RN, BSN, MM, NE-BC

Winchester, MA. – Donna Sherrill, RN, BSN, MM, NE-BC has been named director of maternal child health at Winchester Hospital. In her new role, she is responsible for overseeing the hospital’s inpatient units (including pediatrics, labor and delivery, perinatology, the Mother Baby Unit, Special Care Nursery and Child Life Program), as well as taking a lead role in the strategic planning for women’s and children’s services.

Sherrill joined the leadership team at Winchester Hospital in 2006 as the nurse manager of the Medical Oncology Department. In 2007, she became director of Magnet and special projects, leading her team to successful Magnet re-designation – the American Nurses Association’s highest honor for excellence in nursing – in 2008. More recently, she served as interim director of maternal child health, in addition to her Magnet role.

Sherrill earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Jacksonville University and a Master in Management from Cambridge College. She is president of the Northeast Council of Nurse Executives, and a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives and Massachusetts Organization of Nurse Executives Government Affairs Committee. A certified mediator, Sherrill has a certificate in Negotiations and Conflict Resolution.

“During our interview and evaluation process, it quickly became clear that Donna has the complete confidence of both our staff and our physician leaders in the maternal-child health areas,” said Kathy Schuler, MS, RN, NE-BC, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at Winchester Hospital. “She is a leader who has the vision and operational expertise to continue to move women’s services at Winchester Hospital into the future.”

Lowell General Hospital president and chief executive officer, Normand E. Deschene was elected president-elect of the Massachusetts Hospital Association.

Lowell, Mass. – Lowell General Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer and President, Normand E. Deschene, FACHE, was recently sworn in as President-Elect of the Massachusetts Hospital Association (MHA) for the 2010-2011 term. A long-standing and active member of the MHA, Mr. Deschene previously served as Treasurer

The Massachusetts Hospital Association is a voluntary, not-for-profit organization comprised of hospitals and health systems, related organizations, and other members with a common interest in promoting the health of the people of the Commonwealth. Through leadership in public advocacy, education, and information, MHA represents and advocates for the collective interests of its member hospitals and health systems, and supports their efforts to provide high quality, cost effective, and accessible care.

 Mr. Deschene holds a master’s degree in Hospital Administration from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor’s degree from Providence College. A fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), he has served as Massachusetts’ regent to the College and was named ACHE “Massachusetts Healthcare Executive of the Year” in 2006. 


Cambridge Health Alliance Appoints Chief Medical Officer

Cambridge, MA – Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA), a Harvard-affiliated public healthcare system that serves Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston’s metro-north region, has named Gerald Steinberg, MD, as its Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Steinberg joined CHA in 2005 as Chief Medical Quality Officer and Senior Medical Director. He has led many noteworthy performance improvement initiatives that have resulted in better care for patients with high-risk illness such as pneumonia, heart failure, and myocardial infarction, placing CHA’s aggregate quality measures at or near the top quartile for safety net hospitals across the country. 

Dr. Steinberg has strengthened CHA’s quality and safety measures across all departments, implementing many clinical process advancements, including efforts to reduce hospital-acquired infection and the enhancement of communication and reporting of performance data to guide continued improvement. Additionally, Dr. Steinberg provided medical leadership during CHA’s successful Joint Commission Survey in 2008 as well as a Massachusetts Department of Public Health survey regarding care for stroke patients. 

In his new role as Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Steinberg will provide physician leadership for operations and strategic planning in addition to the oversight of medical quality at CHA. His expertise will be critical in enhancing clinical processes and systems in order to provide high-quality care and programs to patients, physicians, affiliates, and payers. 

“I am both humbled and energized by the support I have received,” said Dr. Steinberg. “I look forward to working with our Department Chiefs and leaders at all levels of our organization as CHA begins its transformation into an accountable care organization (ACO) that will deliver high value health care to our patients and communities. “Dr. Steinberg has worked tirelessly to advance the quality of care at CHA and promote the necessary accountability to ensure we are constantly improving,” said CHA Chief Executive Officer Dennis Keefe. “He possesses a great understanding of CHA and its clinical services, and his leadership will be instrumental in aiding CHA as it adopts a new business model and becomes an ACO.” 

Before coming to CHA, Dr. Steinberg was Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer of UMass Memorial Health Care. Prior to that, he served as interim Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and as Chief Medical Officer of UMass Memorial Health Care, administering medical oversight for the development and operation of the health care system. Dr. Steinberg was appointed the Feigenbaum Distinguished Professor of Quality at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. 

Dr. Steinberg is an AOA graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and received his Bachelor’s Degree, Cum Laude, from Rutgers University where he was a Henry Rutgers Scholar. He received his orthopedic training in the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Program after completing a Research Fellowship at Harvard.


Employees of AdCare Hospital Honored for Years of Service

Worcester, MA – AdCare Hospital of Worcester, Inc. recognized over 50 employees at a Service Awards banquet held at the hospital. “We had a large group of exceptional honorees this year, which marks AdCare Hospital’s 35th anniversary as a provider of addiction treatment,” said David W. Hillis, President and CEO, who bestowed the awards.

  AdCare Hospital recognized Gail Lovejoy, of Food Services, for 40 years of dedicated service and thanked Nancy Kwederdis, RN, of AdCare’s Nursing Department, for 30 years of service.  Paula Morrissette, Psy.D., Inpatient Counseling, and Patrice Muchowski, Sc.D., Vice President of Clinical Services, earned 25-year service awards.
