
James M. Maguire, MD, medical director of Cape Ann Medical Center in Gloucester, was presented the Home Care Alliance of Massachusetts' Physician of the Year Award by Jane O. Woodbury, RN, vice president of business and fund development for VNA Care Network & Hospice.
James M. Maguire, MD, medical director of Cape Ann Medical Center in Gloucester, was named Physician of the Year for his work with VNA Care Network & Hospice, a nonprofit home health care, hospice and wellness agency serving Eastern and Central Massachusetts.
The annual Star awards were established in 1989 by the Home Care Alliance of Massachusetts to celebrate those who exemplify the compassion and commitment that is the essence of home health care. The Physician of the Year category is presented annually to a doctor who has demonstrated active involvement in the home health care field and outspoken support for health care delivered in the home.
“Dr. Maguire and his group of physicians at Cape Ann Medical Center have taken an innovative approach to helping patients with chronic health conditions continue living at home,” said Jane O. Woodbury, vice president of business and fund development for VNA Care Network, who nominated Dr. Maguire for the award.
“They’ve worked with VNA Care Network & Hospice to create the Cape Ann Medical Center Coordinated Care Program, a medical home model. The process included determining the patient selection criteria, program offerings service plan, program agreements and evaluation metrics. The program strives to improve patients’ quality of life and decrease emergency room visits and hospitalizations,” said Woodbury.
A graduate of St. Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. Maguire completed a residency in internal medicine at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and began practicing at Cape Ann Medical Center eight years ago. He has served as medical director of the center for the past four years and has a special interest in geriatric medicine. Dr. Maguire is a resident of Hamilton.
Dr. Maguire has worked with VNA Care Network & Hospice for many years to help area residents continue living at home during times of illness or injury. VNA Care Network brings a wide range of health care services into patients’ homes including nursing; physical, occupational and speech therapy; social work; nutrition; home health aide support; and disease management for diabetes, wounds, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiac disease, asthma and more.
